Understanding how these two elements affect our mood reminds us to create spaces that nurture and uplift, enhancing our physical and emotional well-being.

Natural light and color are fundamental elements of our environment that influence our mood and well-being

The interplay between sunlight filtering through windows, the hues saturating our surroundings, and the way these elements interact with our senses can significantly impact our emotional state. Think about how you feel when sunlight hits your skin.

According to a study published in The National Library of Medicine, “Along with facilitating energy supply, sunlight provided protection against a wide range of diseases—not only physical diseases but also mental disorders,” in humans. In other words, “More sunlight exposure was beneficial, the lack of it was detrimental.”

From the warm, golden glow of sunrise to the cool, calming hues of a clear blue sky, natural light has the power to evoke feelings of joy, tranquility, or energy. Similarly, the diverse palette of colors present in nature can evoke a spectrum of emotions, from the soothing greens of lush foliage to the invigorating blues of open skies.

According to WGSN, the world’s leading consumer trend forecaster, “Natural light has the ability to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and regulate our sleep, while color has the power to affect mood and elicit a psychological or emotional response. Uniting these two factors produces inviting interior spaces that can de-stress, uplift and inspire.”

From emphasizing window seats and south-facing rooms, to incorporating clever cutouts and thoughtful openings, designers have the power to infuse interior spaces mood-boosting sunlight.

Intentionality with color, too, has the power to affect how we interact with a space. In a study conducted by Saracen, 17% of UK workers stated that vibrant colors would increase productivity. How can designers leverage this information in their design decisions? “In residential environments, create a tranquil and inviting atmosphere with gentle hues and semi-transparent materials that soften and diffuse direct sunlight.”

By harnessing the power of sunlight and strategically incorporating colors inspired by nature into our living spaces, we can create environments that promote positivity, productivity, and overall well-being.

As we continue to explore the relationship between our surroundings and our emotional experiences, embracing intentionality around natural light and color in interior design offers new opportunities to cultivate spaces that enrich our lives and nurture our existence.
